SUNSEEKER AUSTRALIA CUP
24th - 27th November 2010
"The premier international match racing event on the Australian yacht racing calendar"
The Sunseeker Australia Cup was first held in January 1982 at Royal Perth Yacht Club to provide the best skippers from various countries the opportunity to build up their match racing skills in preparation for the America's Cup.
It is, for that reason, fitting that the inaugural winner, John Bertrand, went on to win the 1983 America's Cup in Newport, Rhode Island onboard Australia II, breaking the longest winning streak in sporting history. The Sunseeker Australia Cup was a vital step in this historic victory.
In 1988, Royal Perth Yacht Club was selected to host the World Match Racing Championships and it was this event that the Western Australia Yachting Foundation's matched fleet of Farr 36s, built specifically for match racing, was first utilised and continued to be so until 1995. In 1996, the Foundation's new fleet of Foundation 36s yachts replaced the Farr 36s and received unreserved praise from the skippers and crew.
Last year the Western Australian Yachting Foundation, now trading as Swan River Sailing, in conjunction with Royal Perth Yacht Club reintroduced the SUNSEEKER AUSTRALIA CUP with great success. This event is now the premier international match racing event on the Australian yacht racing calendar.
This event is conducted annually on Matilda Bay and City of Perth waters, Western Australia, in the lead up to the annual Monsoon Cup, the final deciding event of the World Match Racing Tour and provides premium match racing for the World's highest ranked competitors on the same class of yacht as those used in the Monsoon Cup.
In previous years, Matilda Bay has been host to the Sunseeker Australia Cup and more recently, the Warren Jones International Youth Regatta. For the Australia Cup, we now include Perth Water positioned directly in front of the City of Perth.
Matilda Bay and Perth Water offer sheltered waters, challenging conditions and are surrounded by river beaches in close proximity to Perth City, providing the perfect location for an international yachting event.
As the Sunseeker Australia Cup will specifically target yachtsmen of the highest calibre including America's Cup crews with world class action for spectators to enjoy over four days. Crowds in the thousands may view the world class match racing contests from around the bays; Kings Park, high-rise buildings in the city and from moored boats around the course.
To leverage off the excitement and on-water action, two social occasions will be organised ashore to welcome competitors and celebrate the event, embracing crews, volunteers, sponsors and spectators in the regatta atmosphere for networking and socialising purposes.
