Swan River Sailing - Annual Racing Events
Swan River Sailing runs an array of sailing events throughout the year, including State, National and International events. These regattas cater for a wide range of sailors from youth and women's categories to open events.
These regattas include:
- Country Clubs Regatta: sailors from Yacht Clubs around Western Australia are invited to enter their team of 6 to 7 crew in this competitive short course fleet racing regatta on the Swan River. The event is held over the Queen's Birthday long weekend in September/October each year.
- Colin Mullins International Youth Regatta: an youth match racing regatta for sailors under 25 years which has recently undergone review. Originally bringing the state’s best youth match racing sailors together, the event is now open to national and international entries keen to gain experience and qualify for the Warren Jones International Youth Regatta - an official World Tour Qualifier Event.
- Warren Jones International Youth Regatta: the youth match racing event of the year! This event, open to the World's best youth sailors under the age of 25 years, offers driven young sailors a pathway to reach their match racing goals on the international circuit. The winner receives an automatic entry to the VII Open de España Grade 1 match racing event in Spain with negotiations taking place to secure the event's status as a World Match Racing Tour qualifier once again.
- Inter Club Championships: raced over three days, this regatta decides which Yacht Club has the best yachtsmen and women. Teams are required to put forward 4 crews of their best sailors to sail the series of 8 races. Special crew criteria applies to regional and international teams to encourage fierce competition. This one is not for the faint of heart.
- Foundation Youth Cup: open to sailors aged 21 years and under, this event is designed to introduce young sailors from all Yacht Clubs and sailing disciplines to the sport of keelboat racing. The day kicks off with a crew practice session before an afternoon of short course fleet racing. A Club-nominated observer/coach is required onboard each boat throughout the event and the number of crew is 7 including the skipper.
- College Cup: this regatta is open to the old boys and girls of Perth's schools. Held in Freshwater Bay and conducted annually by Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, it's both a competitive and fun regatta providing the ideal opportunity for past students to catch up with old friends and colleagues. A recent reform of the crew criteria now allows skippers to sail a maximum of 2 races each, bringing the minimum number of team members to qualify for the event down to 10.
- Women's State Keelboat Championships: Women from around WA are invited to enter their teams of 7 (including the skipper) in this exciting annual state championship event. Held over 1 day, the event consists of close short course fleet racing with the overall winner given the Women's State Keelboat Title.
- Champion of Champions: an event open to all State, National and International Class Champions of the year, deciding which skipper really is the best at picking the wind shifts. Teams may consist of 6 or 7 crew, including the skipper and more than one champion may represent a class.
- Foundation 36 State Championships: Swan River Sailing offers its fleet of Foundation 36 yachts for individual charter against the WA's privately owned yachts of the same design. The evenly matched fleet provides the perfect opportunity to compare boat handling and tactical skills over two days of racing in arguably WA's best one-design racing yacht fleet.
